The Best Food Storage Containers for Keeping All Your Leftovers Fresh

It's time to break up with your hoarded stash of takeout containers. Please!

Protect and transport your favorite grub! Our experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute tested hundreds of containers to find out which were the best at keeping foods fresh.

Keep your homemade (and store-bought) guac looking as good as day one with Casbella's Guac-Lock. It presses out all the air so you can avoid the dreaded browning and keep your dip fresher for longer.

The Snapware Total Solution Plastic Food Storage containers come with a handy ice pack. This meant they kept food cold for hours AND proved super airtight in our tests. Win-win!

Available in 12 sizes ranging from 1- to 16-cups in rounds, rectangles and squares, as well as in various sets.

Almost completely made of clear plastic, the Oxo Pop containers make it easy to see what exactly is inside. When you push a button in the top, the lid is secured to the base.

Available in 0.3- to 5.5-quart sizes plus 5- and 10-piece sets.

Rubbermaid Lock-Its are made of plastic and have gaskets in the lids that lock onto the bases on all four sides to keep air out. Even better: The tops snap onto the bottoms of the containers when they're stashed away so no more losing your lids.

Available in 1.25-cup to 2.5-gallon sizes, and in 12-, 20- and 30-piece sets.

The Joseph Joseph Nest Storage containers are great if you're concerned about space. This line features nested containers and nested lids — so when put them away, you only have to clear space for the largest-sized container. One note: While the tops come in cute colors and are super easy to pop off, we found they didn't maintain a perfectly tight seal.

Available in 4-, 8-, 10- and 12-piece sets.

If you're looking for glass containers that will keep food fresh for a long time, Snapware's Total Solution Glass line proved completely airtight. Just keep in mind that the locking lids are plastic, so when you microwave, use plastic wrap or waxed paper as a barrier to avoid staining.

Available in 7 sizes ranging from 1- to 6.5-cups in rounds, rectangles and squares, as well as in various sets.

Sporting glass-and-silicone coverings and matching plastic lids, the vibrant Lifefactory storage containers are oven-, microwave-, freezer - and dishwasher-safe. That means this set doubles up as bakeware too.

Available in 1-, 2-, and 4-cup sizes in grass green, huckleberry, orange, white and graphite colors.

The containers in this Sterilite line stack inside of each other, so they help control cabinet clutter. There are silicone gaskets in the lids that come in an assortment of colors, depending on the shape and size. Plus, we loved the steam-release vent built into the lid to help avoid popped tops or, worse, accidental burns caused by steam building up.

Available in 3-cup to 16-cup sizes, plus 12- and 20-piece sets.

The SmarTrack Intelligent Storage Solution line from Cuisinart looks like regular food storage containers but an added feature makes it perfect for the super organized. Scan a QR code on the outside of a plastic container and enter the type of food inside in the SmarTrack app, and you can keep tabs on when your food has reached its use-by date.

Available in 7-, 16-, 20-, 34-, 40-, 52-, 68-, 90- and 240-ounce sizes, as well as in a 12 piece set.

If you like the light weight of plastic and don't want to spend a bundle, here's a great-performing choice that comes in a variety of sizes and shapes for use in the fridge and pantry. The lids, which have gaskets, snap onto each side to seal securely.

Available in 4.5-cup to 23-cup sizes and various shapes.

These containers earned top scores in our test for keeping air out (and that means keeping freshness in). The glass base cleans up easily, which means it will still look clear after many uses. Plus, the green lids add a pop of color to your kitchen. Another great feature: The glass containers are oven safe up to 425°F, so you can cook, then store — all in one.

Available in 1- to 11-cup sizes.

Frieling's containers proved to be among the most air-resistant options we tested, thanks to their snap-on lids that contain silicone gaskets. However, after we microwaved pasta sauce inside, the translucent plastic bottoms turned bright red. 😞

Available in sizes from 6 ounces to 3.25 quarts and in four mixed sets.

NuWave's Flavor Lockers offer vacuum storage via a hand pump that sucks out air from inside each container. This made them the top performer in our airtightness test. Just be careful when microwaving spaghetti sauce, as they stain quickly.

Available in a starter set includes a.7-quart and 1.4-quart squares, a 1-gallon storage bag, 2 bottle-lockers and a hand pump.

Considering the price, these disposable containers can't be beat. Whether you're sending carrot sticks to school or packing up leftovers for your guests to take home, you won't get upset if you don't get them back.

Available in a wide assortment of shapes and sizes.

The Pyrex 4-Lock containers defend your leftovers with four locking latches and a robust rubber seal. The 4-Locks are made of glass, so these are a good choice if you're plastic-averse. Unfortunately, we found the seal in the lid didn't keep the container from leaking so handle carefully.

Available in 1- and 6-cup rounds.

These Oggi containers offer a Pinterest-perfect look to your pantry shelf and conveniently nest inside themselves for easy storage. While the two latches on the lids seal lids into place, we found they weren't effective at meeting their claim to be airtightness. These might be best for storing foods you go through fast.

Available in a four and five-piece set.
